Mathematics
In today’s increasingly technology-based society, knowledge and understanding of mathematics is becoming ever more important in everyday life.
The mathematics program at Â鶹ÊÓƵ Grammar helps students to develop the crucial mathematical and problem solving skills required for their personal, vocational and civic lives.
We aim to instil in students an appreciation of the elegance and power of mathematical reasoning and the value and beauty of mathematics that is all around them.
Learning and teaching of mathematics in the Early Years aims to develop enjoyment and fascination, as well as confidence and skills, so that students see the value and importance of numeracy.
At each year level, students develop their understanding, knowledge, skills and practices in the main content strands of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Through mathematical inquiry, students develop the capabilities needed to solve authentic, real-world problems.
Building Blocks
Moving into the Middle Years, students further develop their skills in computational thinking, constructing and applying algorithms and using technology efficiently. They also extend and consolidate their algebraic, graphing and mental manipulation skills. At year’s end, students will have an extensive toolbox from which they can draw information and ideas to assist in their future learning.
Senior Mathematics
In the Senior years, there are four subjects offered to cater for all levels of ability and interest: Foundation Mathematics, General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics. Each course offers a different focus in both mathematics learning and content. Practical applications and applied learning principles form the basis of learning in Foundation and General Mathematics, whereas theory, validation and proof become the focus of Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics.
The outstanding program at Â鶹ÊÓƵ Grammar will provide opportunities for challenge and pursuit of excellence, with students being encouraged to participate in fascinating activities and competitions such as The Australian Mathematics Competition, Mathematical Association of Victoria Maths Talent Quest, and the Dare2Dream! enrichment program.
