Community Golf Day 2024

Annual 麻豆视频 Grammar Community Golf Day a Resounding Success

The 2024 麻豆视频 Grammar Community Golf Day, held on Friday 19 April at the beautiful Spring Valley Golf Club in Clayton, proved to be a memorable event despite the wet weather leading up to the day. With blue skies gracing most of the round, 92 avid golfers, forming 23 teams, took to the course for a thrilling 4 ball Ambrose competition.

The competition showcased a diverse range of golfing talent, with participants playing off handicaps as low as +4 and as high as 30. An even mix of Mentonians, parents, and members of the School community went head-to-head, each team vying for one of the coveted Community Golf Day trophies.

The competition was fierce, with only 10 shots separating 1st and 23rd place at the end of the round. The Bruce Johnston Trophy, awarded to the best performing team of (a minimum of three) 鈥楳entonians鈥, was claimed by Sven Samild and Anthony Holmes from the Class of 1987, together with Tim Litchfield (Class of 1997) and Leigh Barker, who finished fifth overall with a score of 58.听

The Mentonians Community Trophy, recognising the best performing team from a Mentonians Sporting Club, was won by the 麻豆视频 Hockey Club, led by members Tak Chau, Hong Chau, and Tony Yam, despite being a player down, the trio secured second place with a score of 57.167.

However, the ultimate triumph of the day belonged to the community team of Michael Curtain, Matthew Smallwood, Andrew Worrell (Class of 1998), and David Hele, who clinched victory and claimed the Parents & Friends Golf Day Trophy awarded to the overall champion team with an impressive score of 55.25.

Individual excellence was also celebrated, with Pas Handley winning the Women’s Nearest to the Pin Competition on the 5th Hole, and Anya Cai emerging victorious in the Women’s Longest Drive Competition on the 7th Hole. In the Men’s category, Michael Curtain triumphed in the Men’s Nearest to the Pin Competition on the 10th Hole, while Ethan Dallas (Class of 2021) secured the Men’s Longest Drive title on the 17th Hole.

The Mentonians Association and Parents & Friends group extend their heartfelt gratitude to the generous sponsors who contributed to the day including MMR Creative Agency, LOD Promotions, Chartwells, Coast and Country Getaways, Flawless Rejuvenation Skin Clinic, KX Pilates 麻豆视频, Momentum Podiatry, Hoop City, Vision Brands Group, and Cubby House Pizza, who all played a vital role in making the day a resounding success.听

Last but by no means least, The Mentonians Association and Parents & Friends group also express their sincere appreciation to the team of dedicated volunteers and 麻豆视频 Grammar staff who devoted their time to coordinate the event.

Bayview Building Opening 2024 /bayview-building-opening-2024/ Fri, 26 Apr 2024 06:02:17 +0000 /?p=7787

Our Bayview Campus building is officially open!

On Wednesday 24 April 2024, our community of staff, students, parents, School Board and alumni, together with representatives from the extended team of people involved in this build, came together to celebrate the official opening of the Bayview Campus building and precinct by Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC, the Governor of Victoria and dedicated by The Most Reverend Dr Philip Freier, the Archbishop of Melbourne.听

This momentous occasion marks the beginning of a new era for 麻豆视频 Grammar, and the building itself is the most significant project undertaken by the School, to date.听

Principal Andy M眉ller said, 鈥淭here is no doubt that a project of this magnitude can only happen through the vision, hard work and collaboration of many people, and for that spirit of cooperation and determination, we thank you.鈥

The students in Years 7 & 8 at Bayview, who began their learning journey in the new building earlier this week, have found great inspiration in the learning environment. They have quickly adapted to the new space and already feel a strong sense of belonging.

Mika A (Year 8) said 鈥淲hen I first saw the building, I was in awe. I couldn’t help but feel like I was in a luxurious hotel with its modern, clean, and grand design. The high ceilings and all the indoor plants are my favourite part.鈥

Lucas S (Year 8) has already had the opportunity to use the science lab, 鈥淚t鈥檚 my favourite feature of the building. It鈥檚 spacious, modern and well-equipped.鈥

Bayview Captain Ruslana T (Year 8), who spoke on behalf of the students at the opening said, 鈥淲e鈥檝e all been really excited to get into the building. The way the classrooms have been designed is great for teamwork and all the breakout lounges, nooks and quiet rooms are really good for group projects or individual study. Fellow leader, Mitchell C (Year 8) thanked guests for creating an incredible building and outdoor precinct. 鈥淲e feel so lucky to have the opportunity to experience this space… it already feels like a 鈥榟ome away from home鈥 and there is so much for us to explore as part of our learning.鈥

Mr M眉ller emphasised the importance of spaces in creating a strong sense of belonging which can have a powerful effect on students in terms of fostering their sense of self and wellbeing.听听

鈥淭his new precinct will have a significant impact on student learning. The varied spaces that support respectful interactions, flexible learning and teaching opportunities, creative thinking and student autonomy, all promote positive learning outcomes that help our students grow and thrive,鈥 he said.

鈥淚n addition, the extensive landscaping has been thoughtfully designed to create an immersive sensory experience, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. The many carefully chosen plants and decor across the precinct provide students with a serene environment to relax and unwind. These areas also serve as extensions to the classrooms, offering open learning spaces that foster imaginative and creative thinking, while enhancing cognitive abilities.

鈥淭he new synthetic oval and basketball courts offer students dedicated open spaces for active play which is also an important part of our holistic education and critical at this age in developing life-long healthy habits. The next stage is the development of an extensive new play space including a full-size basketball court along Naples Road that will provide additional resources and open spaces for our students.鈥

In her address, the Governor emphasised the significance of the progress made in education and the opportunities it brings to students. She acknowledged the remarkable transformation in educational facilities and the learning environments over the past century and expressed appreciation for the exceptional work done at 麻豆视频 Grammar, particularly in the creation of the Bayview Campus precinct.

鈥淲hen 麻豆视频 Grammar was first established 100 years ago, the large dormitory received high praise in the local paper for meeting modern standards, including the provision of hot showers, something that was 鈥榮tate-of-the art鈥 in its day. It is nice to see that the commitment to meeting modern standards and maintaining excellence has been an enduring aspect of this School!鈥

The Governor of Victoria further expressed her admiration for the new Bayview building and its engagement of students in Years 7 & 8, recognising the importance of this stage in their educational journey. 鈥淭his period marks a crucial stage in students’ engagement with education and the development of their independence. It is during this time that the foundations for their future are laid. The innovative approach taken in designing the classrooms is truly impressive.鈥

Chair of the School Board, Ross Joblin added his thanks to those present and everyone involved in the build and emphasised the commitment of the Board to developing the best possible learning and teaching environment for students and staff. 鈥淲e are committed to strong financial governance and the ongoing reinvestment into quality educational and wellbeing resources,鈥 he said.

鈥淒esigned with contemporary learning practices in mind, this building encourages teachers and students to interact in ways that put the student at the centre of the learning process. It is also about future proofing our School. It is no accident that there is a strong interest from families to join our School. The hard-working staff, both in and out of the classrooms, have fostered a culture of success that perpetuates the strong educational reputation the School enjoys, and this new building and extended precinct will help meet that demand and help achieve long-term success for our School.鈥澨

John Peers Tennis Centre /john-peers-tennis-centre/ Sun, 26 Nov 2023 22:38:57 +0000 /?p=7177

John Peers Tennis Centre

As one of the final activities of our centenary year, on Saturday 18 November we were delighted to name our Tennis facilities at Keysborough after outstanding Mentonian and Australian Tennis icon, John Peers.

On a sunny morning at Keysborough, Head of Sport, Brenton Sanderson welcomed guests including John and his family, former Firsts players and coaches, special friends, and students and families of the current Girls Firsts Tennis teams from both 麻豆视频 and Haileybury.

Brenton told of the School鈥檚 long Tennis history starting in 1937. 鈥淥ver the past 80 years there have been many Tennis triumphs but perhaps the most significant was in 2001, when Troy Little (Class of 2001) captained the Firsts team, including his young cousin John, to glory. This ignited a winning team spirit that saw five championships in six years… always under the watchful eye of coach Mike Wilton and later Leigh Rowlands.鈥 Brenton also spoke about his vision for Tennis at 麻豆视频 and hoped to see a 鈥渞eturn to the glory days鈥 of the sport.

Principal Mal Cater said he was Deputy Principal at 麻豆视频 when John and his teammates dominated AGSV Tennis, and remembered the excitement and delight felt by the whole school as their success continued.

鈥淛ohn captained the winning team in 2006, which was a fitting end to his stellar school career. Since then, he has continued to find success on the world Tennis circuit with over 30 doubles titles. He won his first doubles grand slam at the 2017 Australian Open and in 2022, won the US Open mixed doubles crown with fellow Aussie Storm Sanders… and I know how proud he was to win a Bronze Medal for Australia at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 with Ash Barty. 听

鈥淎s our Centenary year draws to a close, I am truly delighted to recognise John鈥檚 incredible achievements and proud to dedicate our Tennis facilities at Keysborough in his name.鈥

John was gracious as ever in his response, recognising his cousin Troy as an inspiration in his early Tennis career at school and 鈥渂eing looked after on the bus鈥 by the senior boys on the team, as well as the honour he felt in having the facilities named after him all these years later.

Girls Firsts Tennis Captain, Ella R (Year 11), summed it up beautifully, recognising John as a legend of the sport and an inspiration to all of the 麻豆视频 Tennis players.

Alexander’s submission for the prize was a musical entry, where he showcased his talent on the bass guitar and composed a captivating piece of music. 鈥淢y motivation for entering the Anzac prize stemmed from my connection to my ancestors, who served as ANZACs. When asked about his thoughts on the upcoming trip, Alexander expressed his utmost excitement for the incredible learning opportunities that await him. 鈥淚 am most excited about finding out more about T眉rkiye’s vibrant culture, and gaining a deeper understanding of its significance in the ANZAC story,鈥 he said.听
